Is x > 4?

by gmattesttaker2 » Mon Apr 28, 2014 11:05 pm
Hello,

Can you please tell me if my algebraic approach is correct:

Is x > 4?

1.|x| > 5
2. x > -5

1) |x| > 5
=> x = 6 or x = -6 In-suff.

2) x > -5
=> x = 6 or x = -4 In-suff.

1 and 2: => x has to be 6, 7, 8, ...

Hence, suff.

I was wondering if this can be solved as follows when we combine 1 and 2:

|x| > 5 and x > -5

=> + or - x > 5 and x > -5

=> x > 5 or -x > 5 and x > -5

=> x > 5 or x < -5 and x > -5

=> x > 5

Is this also correct?

Thanks a lot,
Sri

Hi Sri,

Yes, your approach is correct. You should notice that, side by side, TESTing VALUES is a remarkably quick, easy and useful way to tackle this question (relatively to doing the algebra). While it's important to know more than one way to answer a question, "tactical thinkers" tend to do better than "technical thinkers" on Test Day, so you should continue to focus on, and practice, TESTing VALUES.
