Say, in June 1989,
the number of sales transactions made by Salesperson X = x and
the number of sales transactions made by Salesperson Y = y.
We have to get the value of x /y.
Let's take each statement one by one.
(1) In June 1989, Salesperson X made 50 percent more sales transactions than Salesperson Y did in May 1989.
Since the comparison is made between sales figures of June and May, we can't get the value of x/y. Insufficient.
(2) In June 1989, Salesperson Y made 25 percent more sales transactions than in May 1989.
No information about Salesperson X. Insufficient.
(1) and (2) together
From (2), we know that y = 125% of the numbers of sales transactions made by Salesperson Y in May.
Say Salesperson Y made p numbers of sales transactions than in May 1989.
Thus, y = 125% of y = 1.25p
From (1), we know that x = 150% of the numbers of sales transactions made by Salesperson Y in May.
Thus, x = 150% of x = 1.5p
Thus, x/y = (1.5p) / (1.25p) = 6/5. Sufficient.
The correct answer:
