Since 1975 the number of women in upper-level management in American corporations have increased by 25 percent; female executives' salaries, however, stilI lag behind those of their male counterparts.

IMO D.

"The number of" requires a singular verb to follow. So, eliminate A, C & E. Between B & D, B has a run on error. D clearly separates the two independent clauses with a ; (semicolon)
