Top 25 reasonable?

by mountaingoat » Tue Nov 15, 2011 2:17 pm
Wondering if I have a chance at a top 25

Quick profile:

- 640 GMAT
- 3.1 UG GPA from top 30 school in finance
- Have been working at the same large insurance company for 4.5 years in a client facing, large producing capacity with 2 promotions
- Played a competitive club sport in college
- No real extracurriculars to speak of, spend most of my extra time rehabing from a surgery.

I have already taken the GMAT 3 times.

Hey mountaingoat --

Our tentative answer is "yes" - at least, depending on what you mean by top 25! (Everyone's lists are different.)

Top 50, undoubtedly. Your profile looks doable.

If you are thinking of schools like Rice or Smith (U Maryland), then your current GMAT score and GPA might work. Even schools like Cornell or McDonough *might* work - it all depends on how you present yourself. It's not likely that you'll easily crack a Top 20 school with these stats.

Of course, everyone is different, and the schools look for different things, but just based on the basics :-) it's a bit of a stretch for the more brand-name schools.

BTW - a 640 GMAT is a good score!! It's really tough to nail in the mid-600s. It's just that all these darn MBA programs are supercompetitive, so it makes it hard.

Hope this helps!!

Hi,

Often candidates overweigh GMAT score and under weigh the importance of essay. It seems that maybe you are not keen on taking gmat again. We would advise you to check class profiles of the schools you wish to apply to. This would tell you in which schools average gmat bucket you fall into.
Rest make sure you balance the profile well and plan the things to utilize your time properly across different activities that play vital role in getting admission and your profile building.
GMAT alone won't determine your chances of admission; academics, beyond the academics will and your work experience plays a vital role as well.
Generally most of the applicants have a good 4-5 years of work experience. Although it is not just the work experience that counts but also what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc. So to leverage this if you can show that in your years you have demonstrated the skills business schools are looking for you could put in a strong set of essays. Hence the quality of your work, your academics and beyond academics will play an important role in determining your candidature.
