Following the split in 1980 , the chances of a spree ballet reunion, as per fans ,were more likely than tank tops and short pants making a comeback.
A. the chances of a spree ballet reunion, as per fans, were more likely than tank tops and short pants making a comeback.
B. spree ballet reunion chances were as likely to tank tops and short pants making a comeback.
C. fans thought spree ballet reunion is as likely as tank tops or short pants making a comeback
D. the chances of a spree ballet reunion were most likely as tank tops and short pants making a comeback
E. fans thought the chances of a Spree ballet reunion were as likely as tank tops and short pants making a comeback

IMO E. Only in E "as likely as" is correctly comparing the chances of "a Spree ballet reunion" with "tank tops and short pants making a comeback."

IMO E, in addition to karmayogi's reasoning, Following the split in 1980
modifies the fans and can't stand alone

I am not sure I understand why "were" is used in the above sentence. I thought 'reunion' is singlular & so it should be 'was', but didn't find it in any option. Can someone please explain?

I think

Following the split in 1980

is modifying "Spree ballet " since it is spree ballet which split in 1980.

Then why E is correct since in E we have fans after the comma ?

Fans is a plural noun, and hence requires a plural verb were.

Subject is fans, subject verb need to agree. Was would be incorrect.

"were" is used for "chances" and not "fans".
That should clear it.

Whts wrong with C, BTW. Can anyone explain.
