I am planning to take my GMAT in April. I have appeared for GMAT 3 yrs ago but ended up with a very bad score of 480 Q 42 V18. This time i really want to score high and cross the 600 barrier. Can you pleas help me how should i schedule my study plan? should i mix both verbal and quant at the same time or finish verbal first. I am following OG 12, MANHATTAN SC, MANHTTAN NUMBER PROPERTIES, MANHTTAN WORD PROBLEMS AND FRACTIONS, POWERSCORE CR.

PLEASE HELP ME TO BEAT THIS GMAT.

THANKS
Hello, please do not call me Sir. I am of the same age ,or probably younger than you. :-D
You seem to have the right set of books. The first step you should take is write down your strategy(you may wanna post it here ,just in case you want some feedback as to how is it) and then work on improving each of the areas.
Going by your Quant score, I don't think that you have much of a problem on the Quant section. However, since you took the exam three years ago, you might have to brush up that also . If you can work a little more on Maths, I don't see a reason why you cannot take your 42 score on the Maths section to at least a 47.
Your Verbal score seems to be quite a cause of concern and I think you'll have to fundamentally alter the way you approach Verbal. Since you have a good amount of time left for taking the exam, I'd strongly recommend that you start reading quality articles from diverse areas. That would help you improve your ability to comprehend various kind of text.
In addition to that, you should have a proper strategy to tackle each of the three areas on the Verbal section. I have discussed some strategies to master CR in the last page of this thread. For SC, you may wanna use SC Grail,in addition to MGMAT SC Guide. I think you'll able to get a better hold of the SC concepts if you go through that book. I think SC is a lot about being able to understand the concepts well and being able to apply those concepts on questions. I suggest that do the questions in OG12 topicwise and not sequentially. Read the explanation thoroughly. In addition to that, you may wanna google the questions if you any question difficult . You may also post your SC doubt on the forums here and the experts would be happy to help ya.
For RC, I suggest that you go through the articles written on this forum by Stacey Koprince. That would help you approach RC well. Also trying reading as much as possible. That'll be incredibly helpful.
Let me know if you have any specific queries.

Well, any kind of reading would help. You may want to ensure that you read the editorials in the newspaper you subscribe to. Apart from that, you may wanna follow The Economist" and Scientific American. They both contain quality editorials.

Assuming that you take the exam by end July, you have 6 months with you to prepare. The ideal time to prepare for the GMAT is considered to be around 100 days or between 3-4 months. Generally, it is seen that it is difficult to maintain momentum for a duration of 6 months.

I am good at quant but not much in Verbal section..
I can see it through your post. You need to improve your English skills quite a bit. Your sentence construction is not impressive and your post seems laden with grammatical errors.

You haven't mentioned your strengths,so as such it will be difficult to commend. However, you'd really need to work a lot on Verbal. And unfortunately Verbal is an area which cannot be as easily improved as can the Quant section be. If I were you, I'd firstly focus on improving my basic English skills and then formally start preparing for the GMAT in another month or so.
Material -- suggest me materials which helps me for good score
I'd firstly suggest that you go through some basic material for English. In addition, you may want to get into the habit of reading so that your understanding of complex sentence constructions, grammar, style ,usage improves.
Remember, given a definite set of skills, you can improve to an extent but not to a great extent. So you should focus on increasing your competency level and then taking on the GMAT .
Hope that helps.

He he, mine was a timid attempt with very limited prep. If in the worst case I don't make it through my target colleges this year. Then m already planing a real thrashing for the beast.
however, I wish I don't have to lock horns with it again. It was a really painful month I tell u. December 13th 2010 to January 20th 2011. I will never forget. Still have nightmares about the torture I went through.

I've already read your debrief several times. i just need a rough estimate of the no of days studied-hours/day.
Then I'll plan out the study this time. Not just randomly study any trash.

I am busy in my toefl prep these days. The speaking part is very irritating I tell u. :x
will be done in a week and hasten apps.
Cheers !!

Hi Rishi,

Congrats on a great score and all the best for your apps.

I have a question for the Quant section, can you please let me know what material you used to prepare for the Quant ?

Thank You

Man, go to a good business school if you get through this year. I don't see much sense in wasting your life taking the GMAT and applying again .You seem to have a background in Entrepreneurship, and an MBA degree ,though helpful for those seeking jobs, may not be all that useful if you plan to become an Entrepreneur post MBA(assuming you want to become one :-D) . Roughly speaking I dedicated around 100 days with focused studying for around 80 days. Studied around 3-4 hours in the weekdays and 5-6 hours on the weekends. By the way, you should be putting your soul in writing essays rather than thinking about retaking the GMAT ?Shouldn't you ?:-D
TOEFL is a cakewalk,man! Don't worry about it all. I'm sure you'll score 105+ . :)

anyways, i am done with TOEFL prep, took a couple of days on youtube, and the OG of course, I am writing my SoP's as well, planning a 2 day Goa trip, need some time off, hopefully the beach sunshine helps me think better :)

however not a bad idea to prepare for the worst, but I agree wit your words, not a wise thing to waste another 90 days of my precious life on GMAT.
Cheers !!

This is regarding the very obvious GMAT strategy . I am preparing from long time for GMAT , you can say 6 months .Now i m really done with it want to give GMAT ASAP. BUt i promised myself until and unless i score consistently in mock test i will not book the date. My scores range form 650 - max 700 in MGMAT. I havent taken GMAT prep , i have saved it for last few days .Books that i have are

MGMAT SC , CR and Numberroperties.
Kaplan premeir + Kaplan 800
OG12 + Verbal review + Quant review
Few other books as well like MGraw AceGMAt and IMS material. Powerscore CR Bible [not to forget that]

Now i find myself at range of 46-48 in quant , i m not improving beyond 48 . And my weakness is verbal .Currently i observed that i am doing bad with CR and RC in tests . I m perform fairly well in CR offline but RC is still the weakest part.I know that RC is the only section that makes score rise like anything .

After all the illustration , i hope u get what my current preparatiion is ? I have exhausted all tests that i have . Now how to practice further for 700+. I find myself still at the mediocre level , i cant reach to the crisp level of accuracy what is needed for the tests like GMAT.My conc also is culprit for the same .I sweat the small stuff u can say that way .

PLease kindly guide me , your experience might help me out of this phase.

Oops i forgot to mention my background . Im an engineer from India [75%], worked in IT .
Thanks & Regards,
AIM GMAT
