It was a beautiful day in MKE... I was pumped about my overall score until i saw my quantitative breakdown (77%)... :x

I'm pretty sure I'm not taking this sucker again, but is this quant score, below the 80th percentile, going to raise red flags from the likes of a H/S/W? Did well in some Q classes in college (Dmouth), but will they be enough?

Time for a drink regardless... :?

Dude,

Congrats on the killer score. Enjoy your bear and foret about taking it again. I understand your concern over the sub 80th percentile in quant, but you are only one point away from it, and with the quant scores skewed high, the adcomm will definitely see your strength in quant.

What it comes down to is this - at this point if you don't gain admission to one of the top tier schools with your score, it will have been for reasons other than your sub 80% quant score. Focus on your essays, and make sure you have outstanding recommendations lined up. Your energies are best spent on those points rather than on trying to increase your quant to 47 (and keeping your verbal at the same level at the same time!).

Cheers!

Thanks man... I appreciate the sense of optimism. Considering that I'm not a verbal guy by any means, i was completely shocked by the breakdown, which has to be one of the weirder ones on here. Was consistently scoring in the mid 40's for verbal and high 40's / 50 for quant. I mean, I'd be an idiot to complain about the overall score, but the balance still irks me a bit..

Agreed on the recs too... best not to look backwards now and plow ahead.. anybody got an HBS adcom friend looking for a couple free drinks tonight? B-)

Generally, my strategy was to expose myself to as many problems as possible, and identifying the ones that were questionable, tough, or ones i got wrong. Keeping this list is key. Also, it's great to regularly cycle through your sources (manhattan, OG) to stay refreshed.

Do NOT use kaplan. Only helped with the AWA, which was largely addressed by the manhattan guide. Take the money you'd spend on kaplan and use it towards coffee for pre-test and beer post-test.

Specific section analysis below:

SC:

Idioms, idioms, idioms. Manhattan verbal guide was huge, and is good preparation for the OG tests and problems. Review frequently.

CR:

Again, Manhattan guide was awesome. The tougher the questions get, the more detail oriented you have to be. Keep your eyes sharp on a second pass when things are confusing.

Reading:

I'm not that great of a reader, so I was again surprised by my score. The trick is to FOCUS. You MUST concentrate to your best ability on the passage. Motivate yourself to stay absolutely focused in these sections no matter how mentally tired you get. If you have a decent memory, you shouldn't have to take notes or anything, you should remember where the necessary details are to get to the right answer. Always be assessing tone and changes thereof.

Hope this is helpful guys. No helpful hints for math though, because according to my test, 2+2 = 5

Agreed - definitely do not plan on retaking. The quant score won't be scary at all. In other words, if you get rejected, it won't be because of your GMAT.

Great job!
