What that means is that there is a high likelihood for improvement to justify the test taker retaking the test. Advising an Indian candidate to retake the test with an initial score of 740 is something I would do with hesitation and only under the right conditions of the person is likely to improve and that retaking the test would not use up valuable time that could be spent preparing the applications (opportunity cost in economics).

But this is solely my opinion; others might disagree with me.

Thanks for your honest opinion , Michael.But i also run the risk of missing Round 2 deadlines in case i go for a retake now and i dont wish to delay my MBA any further . Isnt this a case of Indian Applicants not being due credit in comparison with other demographics .As it is the Indian Applicant f aces an uphill task of doing well on the verbal section in comparison to others

Michael ,Could you please answer 2 questions
1) I was actually scoring around 750-770 on the preps . Would a lower score on the 2nd attempt reflect badly on my motivations.
2) Could I apply to 10-20 Rank colleges with the current score

In your case, retaking the test would be unwise since doing so would affect the quality of your 2nd round applications. Don't worry about the GMAT and concentrate now on writing high quality essays.
