600 GMAT Score - Realistic Chances

by Rudy414 » Fri May 31, 2013 5:35 am
Hello,

After months of self-studying, I took the GMAT this past weekend and got a relatively disappointing 600. I say relatively disappointing because I am not disappointed in myself. I feel that I studied very hard, did everything I possibly could, didn't short-change myself, but at the end of the day, the 600 was lower than I was anticipating. I don't feel it is particularly bad and I feel proud of myself just for having taken this initial step, but that said, personal satisfaction only gets you so far with admissions.

I am planning to apply to Madison, Minnesota (Carlson), and Ohio State (Fischer), as my top 3. I have researched all three schools and know that all three have a student body with an average GMAT score between 670-690. As that is an average, clearly some are higher, some are lower, but from what I have researched, approximately 80% of students at each got above a 620.

Perhaps I have already answered my own question, but I want to post it anyway. What are my chances, realistically, of getting accepted to either of those three schools with a GMAT score of 600? How much better of a chance, realistically, would my chances improve if I raised to a 620, 650, 670, etc.?

Additional details: I have a 3.5 gpa from the University of Minnesota, I have two years work experience as a Jr. Business Analyst for an IT consulting company, I was the vice president of my fraternity in college, and I relocated from Minnesota to Ohio for work, so I am no stranger to adaptation or social adversity.

Thank you,

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

True. 600 is definitely not a good GMAT Score to get into b school like Madison, Minnesota (Carlson), and Ohio State (Fischer). You have a decent profile and good GPA. I would suggest you to give one more shot to your GMAT. And start focusing on your extra curricular and work achievements.

It is highly advisable in your case to take help of professional essay consultants and make your application strong. You can also visit here https://tinyurl.com/bxk8gnp to know more about online essays and analysis.

Feel free to write any other query that you might have.

Cheers!

Hi Rudy,

Sorry to hear that you were disappointed in your GMAT score. I'm sure that is frustrating after all of your hard work and preparation. I would encourage you to consider re-taking it, as schools will accept your highest score, and when you are at the 600 level there is the potential for large increases with additional preparation and practice. I'm not sure if you participated in a prep program but it could be worth it in the long run if it helps you get into an MBA program of your choice and therefore helps with your career opportunities. Be sure during your prep that you take several full-length, adaptive practice exams to see how you are scoring, and then study from the test you took (what you got right and wrong etc) after each.

You are correct that at this point in time, it will be difficult to get into the schools you mentioned with your score. Not impossible, but challenging, and an admissions committee may even wonder why you didn't try re-taking the GMAT if you do not. Your application essays will also be critical to your admission so you'll want to put a lot of time and effort into those. You could even consider waiting a year to apply and getting more work experience and leadership opportunities on your resume, plus more time for the GMAT re-take, depending upon what your rationale and timing are like.

Wishing you all the best in your decisions, and stay positive!
