Hi fellow gmatters
I've religiously read people's posts on this section of BTG and always wished that one day I'd also be able to post here. Finally that day has come, took the GMAT this morning and scored a 770 (Q-50/V-45). I'm specially pleased with my verbal score since I really struggled with verbal early on during my preparation (I hate SCs
)
Here is a quick debrief:
Books used:
Quant
Did the OGs and the Manhattan books. Being an engineer never really strggled with quant though DS was a bit of a bother early on. Was regularly hitting 51 on the practice tests so 50 on the actual test was actually a bit of a downer but guess i can't really complain with a 770
Verbal
SC - The problem area for me initially. Went through a Princeton book early on but found it to be of no help. Then referred to Manhattan SC guide and found it very useful though it didn't have any practice questions. Did some 200 odd questions from 1000 SCs doc. Towards the end of my prep a fellow BTG member recommended Aristotle Sentence Correction Grail and found this book to be very very useful, specially during the later stages of my prep.
CR - Referred to the Powerscore Bible and did some LSAT papers. Was pretty confident in this area and didn't really have too many problems.
RC - I've always been a voracious reader so reading speed and comprehension were never really a big issue. Just needed some regular practice so I did all the passages in OGs 11 & 12 and some 30 odd high difficulty passages from RC99
The only suggestion I can give to fellow test takers is to hold on to your nerves on test day. The GMAT is a bg test of your nerves and initially you will feel stressed out. The key is not to let this get to you but to settle down quickly and get on with the test. I, for one, surely got the first 3 or 4 questions in Quant wrong but then I settled down and don't think I made any mistakes 10th question onwards.
Would like to thank the following fellow BTG members for their help:
Shovit Dhar - for suggesting red bull. It really helped
rishi raj - for recommending the Aristotle books. The SC Grail & RC99 rock.
uprightcitizen - for an awesome debrief; picked up a lot of points from this
Its now time to get started with the apps. Good luck to everyone. If there are any specific queries would be glad to address those.
Cheers
