IMO B.
To apply and to expand follow correct parallel structure.

Its is the correct pronoun for company.

The right answer should be D.

The modifier "as part of its growth strategy" should modify "company". The company is doing something as part of "its" growth strategy, not company's plans. So the options that are incorrectly modifying company's plans, need to be eliminated. Eliminate B and E.

Original sentence A is incorrect because it uses "their" for company.

C is an absurd choice. "the company, in addition to expanding its geographical reach, is also looking" implies the combo subject of "company" and "expanding its geographical reach", which is incorrect.

D clearly states that the company is looking at "applying and expanding" (parallel) and these 2 actions are done "using local insights". See "using" is present along with comma, implying the -ing verb applies to the whole action rather than performing as a noun modifier. D is the best choice.

I opted D as my answer.
The explanation indicates a modifier error in D.
What I fail to understand is the usage of in addition to X, is also Y in the OA

Well, I don't agree with the OA. Probably the question has a problem itself.

X, in addition to Y -> Both X and Y are subjects, just not a compound subject. Y cannot be an action. That's wrong usage.

Actually D seems to change the meaning.

According to the original sentence, the company is doing two things:
1) apply global strategies using local insights
2) expand its geographical reach

D changes the meaning, because it seems to suggest that "using local insights", the company is looking at:
1) applying global strategies
2) expanding its geographical reach

This is clear change in meaning. Hence, can you please advice why you think D is correct?

C gets it correct, because it is equivalent to saying:

...in addition to expanding its geographical reach, the company is also looking to apply global strategies using local insights..

This indeed seems to be what the original sentence is saying.

Please explain.

You use 'also' only when you talk about two things. After removing the portion in between comma, C comes down to this ...

C - As a part of its growth strategy, the company is also looking to apply global strategies using local insights

One part is - "to apply global strategies using local insights ". Where is the other one that warrants the use of 'also' ?

How can this be the right answer ?

Not correct. You are removing removing "the portion in between comma", but that really is the answer to "also".

Am not really understanding your point. Can you please explain.

Actually, I feel that "in addition to expanding its geographical reach" is a non-essential modifier.

Correct me if I am wrong !

ok..so according to you, I am assuming that the following is also incorrect:

Barack Obama, who is the president of United States, is also a father of two daughters.

Clearly "who is the president of United States" is a non-essential. So, as per your interpretation, "also" in the above sentence is incorrect.

Barack Obama is also a father of two daughters.
