Hi iongmat,

Jus confirmed with an expert. Her answer...

1. wrong because of parallel error
2. wrong - generally the apostrophe to show possession is used only for living things..
3. right - there are 2 parts to the plan, one is to apply global strategies using local insights, and the second is to expand geo research
4. wrong - the meaning changes here because the local insight regers to global strategies only and not to both.
5. same as one.

What you said was right. But, I am still confused with essential & non-essential modifiers. Do you have any method to figure this out ? How to find if a modifier is essential or not ?

The OA to an SC from GMAC:
The Sun, which is 400 times larger than the Moon, is also 400 times farther away from Earth.
Here, ALSO completes a thought originating in a NON-RESTRICTIVE which-modifier.
Non-restrictive modifier: The sun is 400 times larger than the moon.
After the non-restrictive modifier: The sun is ALSO 400 times farther away from Earth.
Thus, it is correct for also to complete a thought originating in a non-restrictive modifier.

yep..another example from Verbal Supplement:

Bluegrass musician Bill Monroe, whose repertory, views on musical collaboration, and vocal style influenced generations of bluegrass artists, also inspired many musicians, including Elvis Presley and Jerry Garcia, whose music differed significantly from his own.
