Verbal Killed me. Please help...

by lotus sutra » Fri May 27, 2011 1:16 pm
Hi Everyone

I scored a 540 (Q50 & V15). I prepared for english for 1 month effectively. Did all OG'S questions.
Did not prepare for CR and RC. (Only did OG)

Please advise. What should i do for improving my Score in Verbal??

(Note: I have scored max 30 on GMAT Prep tests)

Thanks
Aps

Find all the verbal practice questions you can.

Answer them.

Look for patterns, try to identify the mistakes that you make repeatedly, be smart about how you approach your questions. When it comes down to it, the only thing that will help is practice.

Use MGMAT guides for Verbal. They are awesome, especially for SC and CR. I am saying it from my own experience.
If I am wrong correct me :), If my post helped let me know by clicking the Thanks button ;).

Thanks Eupfhoria

I identified that lack of stamina and pressure of time made me loose interest in Verbal section in the GMAT exam.

Do you think Practice will only help? Or should i go back to basics...like read more on CR and RC strategies?

Waiting for your response.

thanks

You are on great path okay!! 50 q means whenever you will overcome verbal, you can pass 750 mark easily. So keep working on SC, CR, RC, The Economist, New York Times, Powerscore CR Bible, Powerscore RC Bible, LSAT Logical reasoning etc, just keep working on it. you will make it.

you can also Thank me easily by just clicking the thank you button on the top right hand side of the post. ;) Knewton is also good, check the review here https://reviews.beatthegmat.com/knewton and also dont forget to check out the poll here in the BTG https://www.beatthegmat.com/best-gmat-pr ... 49363.html

Grockit online prep module is also equally good where you can get into a study group online. And BTW, I am still preparing for GMAT, I have been preparing like 3 months now but had taken classes last year and went through a dry period after that. I am taking the test on August 23rd. :)

Work consistently on GMAT. Spend two hours daily. A Kaplan report says that 100 hours of consistent preparation would get you an awesome score on GMAT. :)

Hey Victory GMAT

Thanks!I surely work very hard on Verbal. I'm gonna start my GMAT prep today(exactly a week after my 1st attempt)...just wanted from you.

should i just start doing practice questions(mix of CR, RC and SC). or should i go back to the basics and devise or revise the strategies?

Look forward to your response.

That's a sound approach. I want to improve my concentration and stamina...one thing i realized is paramount for an excellent verbal score.

Do you sit at a stretch of 3-4 hours for improving your stamina in Verbal? or 2 hours is enough?

Because in real GMAT, when the verbal section starts, a normal human brain is exhausted...so i wanted to work on improving my stamina side by side.

Hi Lotus Sutra,

It is evident from your score that you are good at the Quant. You must make sure that in the process of improving your verbal, you do not loose focus of Quant. I will suggest you device a 80-20 or 90-10 plan for verbal & quant. By this I mean study verbal for 80% of the time and Quant for 20% of the time or something similar as per your comfort levels.

Coming to verbal, I would suggest you go through the strategies first for each of the section. I had followed MGMAT for SC, Princeton Review for CR and I was definitely helped. You may want to refer them but if you already have other standard material and you feel they are good then continue with what you have. For RC, I feel it needs more of a reading and comprehension practice than working on the strategies. Best way to improve RC is by reading articles, editorials etc.

1: Start solving problems in timed conditions once you feel you have understood the strategies and you have improved your accuracy. Right now you should concentrate on improving the accuracy. Once that is achieved then attack the timing. You can make a plan in such a way that you work on your accuracy till 1 month before main exam (worst case 3 weeks) and then last 1 month/3 weeks you should time your questions.
2: Try solving 2 or all 3 verbal section questions everyday. Do not solve only CR on one day, only SC on another. Atleast a mix of 2 sections is always a good idea.
3: Keep checking your strong and weak areas and devote more time to the weaker sections.
4: Since your problem is stamina, I would suggest you take practice tests at regular intervals. Also, you must take full 4 hour exams with AWA. You can also make your own tests by taking questions from each section from any source and solving them in a timed environment. Since you are good in Quant, you can atleast make a 41 question test of verbal and solve it in 75 mins. This way you will not have to find a 4 hour slot and you will also practice solving questions in timed environment.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need any specific information.

Regards,
Sandeep

Hey Sandeep

I wanted to know ...is OG material enough for RC? I have RC 99 (Aristotle material) ...is that a good source?

I follow your tips. I'm gonna attack accuracy and then timing.

Regarding the FLT's should i start taking the tests from now? Considering my stamina is very low.

Thanks

I am just starting my preparation and don't have much idea about the amount of time required but this 100 hour time seems too less because most of the people I know have studied for 4 months to get a good score.

Ask them how time they spent on GMAT and I am not saying not to go beyond that. Fill out this form to receive the link to the recordings of the Kaplan Blueprint event https://www.jotform.com/form/10272111976
