Hi All

I read somewhere that "AND ALSO" together is redundant. and while in one similar SC's explanation in verbal review, the official explanation says the two effects, stated in parallel ways, could be linked with AND ALSO.

here is the Question.

Many policy experts say that shifting a portion of health-benefit costs back to the workers helps to control the employer's costs, but also helps to limit medical spending by making patients more careful consumers.

(A) helps to control the employer's costs, but also helps

(B) helps the control of the employer's costs, and also

(C) not only helps to control the employer's costs, but also helps

(D) helps to control not only the employer's costs, but

(E) not only helps to control the employer's costs, and also helps

I agree B is wrong. But what is the senetnce B says helps to control.....and also to limit....??

Isn't and also wrong here. Please provide examples with ur explanations.

Simple answer: a GMAT SC answer choice that is wordier than it needs to be will be CORRECT when no other answer choice is correct/parallel, and INCORRECT when another is correct, equally parallel, and doesn't use the extra words.

Hi Jim

Thanks for the reply and i have certainly understood your point but my question is if we are given two choices such as examples below then which one to choose and why??

1. A and also B ( A and B are parallel )
helps to control.....and also to limit....

2. Both A and B
helps both to control.....and to limit....

Here i know that GMAT prefers 2, but please tell me the reason to eliminate 1.??

Many Thanks in advance.

You would eliminate it based on the second half of the simple rule I posted. Your answer #1 has an extra word, your answer #2 is equally correct and lacks that extra word, so you eliminate #1.
