10 scale GPA to US scale conversion

What would be a US based GPA conversion (on a 4 point scale) of 8.37 on a 10 GPA scale (Rank- top 15% in class) from one of the IITs (Indian Institue of Technology) . I know most top US B-schools don't ask the conversion, still wish to understand from my overall application perspective. I have read some crazy conversion articles and interpretations on this.
Essentially, is that something that highlights my academic potential/ adds weight?

An 8.37 is very good. Don't trust most of those scale conversions because the grading systems are sooo different, and it also changes from school to school. I'd roughly estimate that it's about a 3.8 from an Ivy League (somewhere in the top 5% likely). The school and adcoms anyhow ask you to report your original grades and are very familiar with IITs, so they will know what this means relative to others.

Jon,

Just one thing- my class rank was within top 15%. Does the GPA (8.37) still qualifies as 3.8 (top 5% Ivy League Class)?

I would say don't bother about that level of detail. As long as you've an undergrad degree from IIT and you're in top 15% of your class, you're good to go as far as your academic record is concerned, provided you are fine on GMAT score.

I concur in that an 8.37 is an excellent score from an Indian university, especially an IIT. I believe 70% is usually the threshold between First Class and First Class with Distinction.

Focus on your GMAT.

Well, let's put it this way: YOU get to choose how you present the information you have. An 8.37 is mighty good. If the percentile ranking seems less good than the numerical, just leave it out...

Always put your best foot forward - if you graduated with distinction, write that and leave the rank out. The 8.37 is FANTASTIC from an IIT and even better if you did engineering!

Remember - you always compete against your pool so the adcom isn't trying to compare you to someone who has a 3.8 and wondering if you're a 3.79 or 3.81. You're competing against other folks from India who went to systems that have similar grading methods.

Building on what Bahvik said it is even better than that for you in that you will be compared to Indians from similar systems who went to IITs or equivalent schools and scored above an 80% so do not sweat it.
