A works.

B - "they" is incorrect because the subject is "cluster", not "states".

C - is wrong because the logic doesn;t work: "even though A...and B" doesn't make sense. "Even though" sets up a contrast, but "and" is a continuation.

D - has no verb

E - has several errors, the most obvious is the use of "they"

Here is the sentence with D inserted.

Even though the highly populated cluster of states that comprise the Northeast subregion of the United States, providing most of the country's financial and governmental services, nonetheless yields less than 10% of the entire country's food supply.

All of these clauses are dependent. You either need to add an independent clause at the end, or build a subject into the final clause so that it can stand by itself.

I eliminated D because,

Even though the highly populated cluster of states that comprise the Northeast subregion of the United States, providing most of the country's financial and governmental services, nonetheless yields less than 10% of the entire country's food supply.

I felt that providing does not have a clear antecedent. I mean it could either have cluster or the subregion as an antecedent. (Assumption - verb+ing will modify the subject of previous clause)

Is my reasoning proper?

D is a fragment. There's no subject for "yield"; the present participle "providing" is ambiguous.

Whether the use of 'even though' and 'nonetheless' is proper?
