Argument - Kindly Rate : GMAT next week

by Mahesh » Sun Aug 09, 2009 3:59 pm
Kindly rate my argument essay. I have my exam next week and would certainly like to receive some feedback

The following was used as part of an internet advertising company's appeal to businesses: "Furniture Depot employed our internet advertising company to help. Since then its sales increased by 10% over last year's totals. Furniture Depot's success demonstrates how using our internet services can increase your profitability.

The author cites that a furniture company has increased its sales by 10% over the previous year. He concludes that the reason for increase in profits is because of internet advertising company that the furniture company used to advertise its products. The argument sounds persuasive at first glance, but it has many logical fallacies that are attacked below.

First, the author never cites any evidence that ad's are the only reason that profits increased for the company. There could be other marketing gimmicks such as improved deign of furniture, enhanced features, discounts in furniture etc that could have contributed to the profits.

Secondly, The author assumes that the Ad company is an independent organization adn its results are not biased, but it may be the case that the ad company might have been started by the furniture company as a part of marketing strategy to boost its furniture sales.

Thirdly, the author's conclusion is based on the fact that all people irrespective of the geographical area, education knows to use the internet. While this may be true in urban areas, many people in rural areas and villages have still not used the internet. The argument assumes without any evidence that all people know how to use the internet.

In addition, the author posits that since sales increased 10% profits also increased. It could be that the number of furniture’s sold more and the costs of furniture’s are less. Also increase in sales of furniture in 1 year is termed as a success for the ad company, while this may be true in some cases, in reality 1 year is really short term and cannot be used to judge the ad company.

Finally, the author generalizes that if the increase in profits apply to a furniture company it applies to all companies in all other domains. The author never provides any information that the internet advertising is applicable to other industries.

In conclusion, the argument as it stands contains logical fallacies and had it included proper evidence as mentioned above, the argument would not only be complete, but also persuasive and convincing.

Hi Mahesh,

good job with the essay. you attacked the argument and the conclusion quite well.

the only thing is that you did not say how the argument might have been strengthened. i think this is a requirement when writing analysis of an argument essay
