How to calculate score

Hi all,

Can someone please tell me how is the score on the GMAT calculated? I am aiming for a score above 600? How many questions in each section do I have to get right in order to get a better result, i know there won't be a definite number but can someone give me a range?

And also can you explain in simple words how are the scores calculated cause I was kind of confused how from 0-60 in the Quant and Verbal the score is transfered?

The GMAT is an adaptive test, and it is not scored like any test you've taken before. The number of questions you answer correctly does not have very much to do with your score. What matters is the difficulty level of the questions you can answer, and the difficulty level of the questions you can't. Most test takers get about 60%-70% of their questions right, no matter what their level. Test takers who score well simply get more difficult questions right than do test takers who score badly. And since the test is adaptive, a test taker who is doing well will mostly be seeing only harder questions, while a test taker who is not doing well will mostly be seeing easier questions.

To get a 600, you will either need to be slightly above average in both sections, or excellent in one section and near to average in the other. The Quant and Verbal scaled scores range from 6 to 51 (not from 0 to 60). To find out what an average or median score is in each section, you can consult the percentile tables in the back of the Official Guide.

To illustrate what Ian said in his post about the number correct answers having little to do with one's score, consider this experiment I performed.

I took GMATPrep Practice Test #1 four times, and each time I answered every second question correctly (I did this for the quant section only). Given that I correctly answered exactly half of the questions each time, you'd expect my quant scores to be roughly the same for all 4 tests.

My 4 scaled scores were: 19, 23, 26 and 42

This represents a percentile range from approximately 7th percentile to the 57th percentile.

Ok I understand you guys that in the Quantitive and Verbal section the score may vary depending on how hard the questions were!

My question is although different. What percent of the total score is the quantitative and verbal section. What percent of the total score is integrated reasoning and what percent of the total score is the essay.

The 600 you are aiming for will be comprised of ONLY the Verbal and Quant sections. IR and AWA receive separate scores. The make up for the score you are concerned with is 50/50 between the two sections (quant and verbal).

The number of questions right varies. You can get 15 wrong and receive many different scores. The best thing to do is take a practice exam and start to get a feel.
