why C is wrong, pls, explain

I think C is wrong cause of 2 things... One is this sentence should be in present perfect... The time-frame of the sentence is unknown (i.e. when it happened exactly) and so present perfect should be used instead of simple past.... Hence a,c,e are eliminated... Also in C "such an end" is a very rough construction.

Between option B and D, B has rough word-word usage.. One is devoted for something.. Or towards something.. not devoted to do...

So methinks answer is D

B - to do that - clearly refers to the act of finding the site of ancient Troy.

D - for that - not as effective as "to do that".


hence IMO B.

it goes arallel wid determined and "To that end" sounds good...
it can be 'has devoted' (if at all) if v know that he is still continuing...this is how i think...

OA is E. past tense is nessessary to maintain paralelism with "determined". But why C is wrong?

'Such' can be used to give examples but to point to one particular thing, "that" is preffered. Here the questions talk about one particular idea "finding the city of troy" so "that".

IMO E. Other options either use 'such' or use the present perfect 'has + participal'(which is not required here as there is is no evidence to support that the search is still on)

This is what I think, guys please post if u disagree with the explanation or wana add something

completely agree with reachac...'that' is used for something particular, as it is in this case...whereas such is used for giving examples...

I am not clear of difference between "such" and "that" as you said. Pls, give example which show difference.

I think: "such N1" is used when N1-noun is truely present at previous place in the sentence. "that N1, "the N1", "this N1" can be used without the presence of N1.

But I am not sure of my thingking

I do not have explanation for this questions. This is one of the 70 brutal SC I download from internet.

Anyone know the reason why E is correct, pls, explaine. We help one another.
