A modifier should be as close as possible to what it's modifying. Since D contains no errors and places the modifier because closer to what it's modifying (fail), we should eliminate E and pick D.mundasingh123 wrote:Sorries i should have mentioned "infinitive " instead of preposition.niksworth wrote:I don't think that it is a prepositional phrase. E.g. I love to run.
Ok, then "to maintain" is verb modifier and it modifies fail
So in this case , can another "because" clause modify "maintain" in the verb modifier (to maintain).
My doubt still remains the same.

I like you because you bake cookies.
In the example above, because you bake cookies explains why I like you and thus is functioning as an adverb modifying the verb like.

They have the same basic meaning. The primary difference is emphasis: sentence 1 stresses the reason (because you bake cookies); sentence 2 stresses the result (I like you). On the GMAT, this sort of subtle difference is not sufficient reason to choose one version over the other.msingh wrote:how about if we change your sentence -

TO
Because you bake cookies, I like you.
Are the 2 sentences the same i.e have the same meaning ?

I guess this should help here.. This is Ron's reply tom this question
this is NOT a GMATPREP verbal question. please don't post non-GMATPREP questions in the GMATPREP folder; thanks.
once the forum software allows, i will move the thread.
this problem comes from "1000sc", a source whose questions (and answers) are at best sketchy and at worst misleading. DO NOT USE 1000SC.
the only questions in that source with any redeeming value are problems that have been lifted from gmatprep. the others are almost entirely worthless rubbish.
there is NO WAY that an official problem would contain choices (d) AND (e), both of which would be considered correct. although one may claim that there is pronoun ambiguity in choice (e) - see this post - there have been, and are, plenty of official problems containing a similar degree of "ambiguity" in their correct answers.
