Day 1 - questions

by AurobindoSaha » Thu Jun 24, 2010 2:41 pm
Hello,

As for Day 1's assignment, I did not quite understand the following explanation on PS & DS in Diagnostic Test section of OG12.

Will appreciate if any one of you can help me to understand these.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q 14. very complicated explanation, can someone please re explain
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q 15. The way power of 10 is calculated is first by knowing (multiplying the prime numbers < 20). In real test is it intended that we need to do so big multiplications 2x3x5x7x13x17x19. Is there any better way of solving this problem?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q 25. The method explained by squaring each sample number looks very crude. Its involves lots of maths. A better way I find is as follows -

We are considering 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 here as unit digit of n

just concentrate in squaring or cubing only the unit digit of n (i.e. the numbers mentioned above).

According to my understanding no need to test by squaring the complete number n

Statement 1: Satisfied for 5,6 - Insufficient
Statement 2: Satisfied for 4,5,6,9 - Insufficient

we can not arrive at a conclusion what will be the unit digit of n.
Hence E

Please let me know if my approach is correct.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q 26. I chose C, Basically the question is asking p as LCM of 2,3,5,7 i.e. 210
The answer is actually E, just because I assumed the word "only" as implied.
Feeling tricked :(
Anyway, I accept E as correct answer.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q 31. I am seeing the solution has been done by trial and error method using different values. This can be very laborious in actual test. Is there a better method available.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q 34. Did not understand the explanation

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks in advance
Thanks
Aurobindo

Hi Aurobindo,

It would be great if you could write the questions, tis tough to refer to the OG and then solve.

Cheers

Eric,

The questions are mix of PS and DS, so I am not sure if you like to move this into PS forum only. Anyway, I am absolutely OK with what you feel best organizes the forum posts.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK, here is a question and I did not under its solution given in OG12 (page 63)

Of the 66 people in a certain auditorium, at most 6 people have birthdays in any one given month. Does at least one person in the auditorium have a birthday in January?

1. More of the people in the auditorium have birthdays in February than in March
2. Five of the people in the auditorium have birthdays in March.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In due course, I will post the other questions for which I did not understand the OG12 explanation.

Thanks in advance.
Thanks

Aurobindo -

This is a DS question. But anyways, here is the answer.

The problem says that at the most 6 people have birthdays in a given month. So if you divide 66/6 you have 11 months with people having a birthday. Now looking at the statements:

1) If more people have birthdays in February than in March, then you can assume that March has <6 people, so the remaining will be part of January ---> Remember there can only be 6 people at the most in the other months. So statement 1 is sufficent.

2) Same as first statement, if 5 people have birthdays in March, the other 1 should have a birthday in January because no other month can have more than 6 people. So statement 2 is also sufficient.

Answer, D

Thanks for that feedback--you're absolutely correct, I mis-forwarded this post. May I ask a favor? Can you please break up each question into a single post (and place them in the correct forum) in the future? That will make it MUCH easier for this community to respond.

Appreciate your help,

Eric

Q45:

Was I the only one who interpreted "five of the people" as "at least 5 of the people but possibly more"?
