B ?

My reasoning -
'As much as' and not 'as much than...So 'A' is out. In 'C' and 'D', vanquished's doesn't seem to be right and in 'E' faulty parallelism between Victor (singular) and the vanquished side (many, plural). So left with 'B'

A. as much relief on the victor's side than it did on the vanquished.
B. as much relief among the victors as among the vanquished.
C. as much relief on the victor's side as it did on the vanquished's.
D. relief both on the victor's side as well as on the vanquished's.
E. relief both for the victor and the vanquished side.

as much THAN is wrong - Eliminate A

both .. as well as is wrong Eliminate D

E is wrong both for the victor and (for)...it is also wordy

Between B and C

C is wordys and I dont like "it"

B it is

Wrong idiom. should be as much as

B. as much relief among the victors as among the vanquished.
Correct. uses the idiom correctly and parallelism is maintained
as much X as Y

C. as much relief on the victor's side as it did on the vanquished's.
D. relief both on the victor's side as well as on the vanquished's.

Vanquished's: wrong usage.

E. relief both for the victor and the vanquished side.
No parallelism. Also meaning is altered coz the contrast in 'as much as' has been replaced by coordinating conjunction and.

The only problem with C is the it.
In fact if meant correctly, the it is supposed to refer to the entire clause "the sight of the white flag being raised". So, that doesn't make sense.

A is wrong for using As much as Than format
B is correct
C is mentioned above
D and E change the meaning by pointing they have relief rather than quantifying the amount of relief
