word problem from gmatprep

by smallsorrow » Tue Sep 30, 2008 9:41 am
Probably my head is a bit slow today...
but this took me ages too:

Harry started a 6-mile-hike with a full 10-cup canteen of water and finished the hike in 2 hours with one cup of water remaining in the canteen. If the canteen leaked at the rate of 1 cup per hour and Harry drank 3 cups of water during the last mile, how many cups did he drink per mile during the first 5 miles of the hike?

A) 4/5
B) 5/6
C) 1
D) 6/5
E) 5/4

total water used = 9 cups
2 hours so water leaked = 2 cups

water used = 7 cups
last mile 3 cups

so other 5 miles 7-3 = 4 cups
rate = 4/5

My take is 4/5

please confirm the OA

Distance=6mile
Cups=10
time taken is 2 hrs

so effectively 3 miles/hr was the speed

now, 1 cup was left and 2 cups leaked over the period of 2 hrs

so 7 cups for the journey

again , he takes 20 mins to cover a mile ...

and he drank 3 cups in the last 20 minute hilke which is 1 mile

so he drank 4 cups for 5 miles
x cups for 1 mile

5x=4 and hence x=4/5

Hope this helps

vishu
