At anjelina winery the vintner wants to blend this yr's new sherry(NS) with last yrs old sherry(OS) to create nxt yrs. future sherry(FS)Total capacity of barrel he uses is 240lts that is partially full of OS.If the barrel is then filled to full capacity with NS and FS will have 17% alcolhol by volume(ABV) what is the ABV of NS?

1.There will be 40% more NS than OS in the filled barrel and the OS is 1.72% higher in ABV than the NS.

2.100lts of OS is in the barrel at 18% ABV

PHEW!Any takers?

IMO D

1) from statement OS=100 ltr, NS =140 lts
ABV of NS=x
ABV of OS=x+1.72

(x+1.72)*100/100 + x*140/100=17
you can find x
SUFF

2)from statement OS=100 ltr, so NS=140 lts
ABV of OS=18 %

18*100/100 + x*140/100=17
SUFF
The powers of two are bloody impolite!!
