A salesclerk is paid a minimum weekly salary of $210 plus a commission of 10% of the value of sales she makes in excess of $3,000 for the week. If the salesclerk wishes to earn at least $370 for a week, What is the minimum value of sales she must make for that week?

A) $1,600
B) $3,700
C) $4,600
D) $6,700
E) $6,910

The OA is C.

I think that I can solve this PS question of the following way,

If minimum Salary - $ 210. To get a weekly salary of $370 - salesclerk needs to get $160 in commission.

Commission is 10% of sales done in excess of $3000. To get $160 in commission, the salesclerk should generate $1600 in excess of $3000. So the total sales done should be $4600., right?

Please, can any expert explain this PS question for me?. Thanks.

Yes, this method of solving works - you have the OA as D in your post, but it should be C.

You could do this same process by building an equation based on the information from the equation:
$$210+0.1\left(x-3000\right)≥370$$
where x is the value of sales she makes in a week. Then solve for x.

Letting t = her total sales for the week, we can create the following equation:

210 + 0.1(t - 3000) ≥ 370

0.1t - 300 ≥ 160

0.1t ≥ 460

t ≥ 4,600

Answer: C
