If x y = – 6, what is the value of x y (x + y)?

(1) x – y = 5.

(2) x y^2 = 18.

Stmt 1:

If x = 3, y = -2, x+y = 1, so xy(x+y)= -6.
If x = 2, y = -3, x+y = -1, so xy(x+y) = 6.

Insufficient.

Stmt 2:

xy^2 = 18
xy*y = 18
-6y = 18
y = -3

since xy = -6, x must be 2. we now know x and y values. Sufficient.
