If a piece of wire is cut into three pieces of unequal lengths, what is the length of the longest of the pieces?

(1) The combined length of the shorter two pieces is 36 feet.

(2) The combined length of the longer two pieces is 40 feet.

length of each side: x. y. z

St1: x+y = 36
St2: y+z = 40
You have 3 unknowns and 2 equations. Hence answer is E.
