Growing competitive pressures may be encouraging auditors to bend the rules in favor of clients; auditors may, for instance, allow a questionable loan to remain on the books in order to maintain a bank's profits on paper.

(A) clients; auditors may, for instance, allow
(B) clients, as an instance, to allow
(C) clients, like to allow
(D) clients, such as to be allowing
(E) clients; which might, as an instance, be the allowing of

Help requested on the question above with explanation. What part of grammar is being tested here?

Thanks

A is the best,

(A) clients; auditors may, for instance, allow (Correct)
(B) clients, as an instance, to allow - incorrect comparison. changes meaning. clients are not allowing..(auditors are allowing)
(C) clients, like to allow - use of like is incorrect.
(D) clients, such as to be allowing (use of such as is incorrect)
(E) clients; which might, as an instance, be the allowing of (use of which might and allowing of is incorrect)

the question is testing a lot of things including connecting clauses, use of as, meaning, like, such as etc. A is also correct because it connects 2 clauses with a semi colon.
