Exponents with like bases

by MizzouTiger » Sat Feb 21, 2009 9:37 pm
Question:2 + 2 + 2^2 + 2^3 + 2^4 + 2^5 + 2^6 + 2^7 +2^8 =

The answer is 2^9, but why? I can't seem to find the exponent rule that applies to this problem.
GMAC GMATprep 1 - 680
GMAC GMATprep 2 - 730
Kaplan Practice Test - 560 (another victim of Kaplan's artificially low scores)

clearly 2+2 = 2^2
2^2+ 2^2 = 2^3 .. and so on.

2 + 2 + 2^2 + 2^3 + 2^4 + 2^5 + 2^6 + 2^7 +2^8
= 2^2+ 2^2 + 2^3 + 2^4 + 2^5 + 2^6 + 2^7 +2^8
= 2^8+2^8 = 2^9
