610 (Mocks- 690/700) : Looking for Advice.

by p111 » Mon Dec 17, 2012 3:32 pm
I had appeared for the gmat first on 5th Oct & scored a 570(Q42, V25). I was getting around 600-640 in my last 3 mocks from MGMAT & GMATprep) plus I missed last few Qs in Quant. I came to know from various test takers\forums that MGMAT & esp. Gmatprep are the best determiners of the actual score +-20. I was quite fine with score & analysed that I had time management issues + I wasnt so fine on SC skills, so knew the area of improvement.
Second Gmat I planned on 29th Nov. The 2 month prep time, i had made sure to put all my efforts. This resulted in 690-700 in my last 4 mocks(MGMAT & GMATprep). Range: Q(48-49), V(34-37). I improved my SC. My time management also was good now with the help of these mocks(All the mocks I gave were full length incl AWA, IR & recomended time breaks b/w sections). On gmat, I scored a shocking 610(Q47, V27).(A dip of min. 7 in Verbal)During the test time I was in full confidence on almost each Q & was moving quite well. I finished the last Q. in both sections(Q & V) with 20-30 seconds to spare.

I really dont know where i lacked in this attempt. The time mgmt was good, i knew what i was during the test. How could a 100 mark fall be possible.

I know it has to be me who knows best where I might have gone wrong that day. but I need your help here as in how can I analyse or know what I was lacking.what possibly was wrong. could it be a external factor like the test day, my mood.... or its just an 100 point big ladder that I misunderstood & should probably move on now.

I can also utilize your exp. with similar test takers. You may share their improvements or strategy.
I plan to give 1 last attempt , but not sure how can i keep a count on which area to improve on & blindly just giving gmat without improving what went wrong doesnt sound good. what if i score a 700+ in mocks, but there is a chance that the problem might still remain the same.

PLEASE ADVICE.

Being stuck there ,I am seriously looking for different point of views or thoughts that could lighten it up. Thanks !!! :)

i received a private message regarding this thread.

unfortunately, there's very little in this posting that could serve as a basis for specific advice.
you've given a lot of score numbers, timing figures, etc. however, when it comes to the most important part -- what you actually did to prepare for the exam -- you haven't given any information at all. (you just wrote that you "put in all your effort", but didn't explain what you did to prepare.)

accordingly, there's not much i can say that is specific to your situation, since i don't really know what your situation is yet.
however, there are some pieces of advice that are common to just about all test takers. many of those can be found in this post:

P111,

That day - Nov 29 - was jinxed... I was trying to improve my score from the previous 660 and ended up at 610. I too was doing around 720 in mock test and finished real test on time and confident of at least 700. Alas!
