Hello,

Currently I am working with an Indian MNC in the IT sector. But I have resigned and I am serving a notice period of 3 months. I will be starting my tech company in MAY 2009. However I will be starting the company alone.

I will be applying for the MBA in the coming months of Aug09 to Dec09. I hope my plan to start my company is not seen as a negative point in the admission process. Also could you guide me on one more issue. I will not be having any supervisor, so how will I get the recommendations. I plan to develop my software products as a result I am not sure how long will it take to get clients and thus their recommendations.

I have given GMAT and I had scored 670. I will be giving my GMAT in the month of MAY just after leaving the company. I plan to apply to Stanford GSB again as I had got a reject this year in round 1.

My current profile :

Hello, Yash,

First, I’m glad you’re re-taking the GMAT because it would need to be higher for Stanford.

Regarding starting the company, it could be either a plus or a minus, depending on how compellingly you make your case for it. I’d say it probably would be less than positive unless you present a very strong rationale. If you do, it could turn a potential problem into a net plus. However, top MBA programs want the students to be deeply engaged in their program full-time. Leading a new venture is an extremely demanding role. The schools will need to understand how this role will be filled in your two-year absence. If they assume that you expect to do both simultaneously, it will be a problem in their eyes.

You can use recommendations from previous supervisors and other superiors at your latest place of employment, especially since it’s not so long ago.

Best regards,
Cindy Tokumitsu

Dear Cindy

Thank you for your response. You have given me a good direction to put up a good case in front of the MBA Adcom members. I have time to think about how can I turn my case into a net positive.
