Please Evalulate my Profile!!!

by leafs4ever93 » Thu Dec 11, 2008 11:15 am
Hi

I'm a Canadian, 28 years old. I have been working since May 2006 (2.5 years)

I graduated from a Canadian University with two degrees

3 year Bachelor of Science - Biology
4 year Bachelor of Engineering - Biochemical Engineering

My grades were poor to put it mildly... 68% cumulative average (a similar average for my last years of university as well)

I'm writing the GMAT in a couple of weeks and I've been averaging between 650 and 700 on mock exams.

Currently I work for General Electric. I deal directly with clients in an Account Manager type of position. ie. I deal with process and engineering issues for my client list. I plan on working on my MBA part time (evenings and weekends)

I will be applying to Laurier, York and McMaster

Do I stand a chance?

Thanks

Kev

Kev,

You certainly have a chance with those schools, but it will take some work to get an application prepared that will overcome the grades issue.

I have several mitigation strategies for you.

First, make sure you do get above a 650 on the GMAT and preferably closer to 700. 650 is the average for York and you definitely want to be in the top 50% pulling the average. If you can get significantly higher, it'll go a long way towards canceling the previous academic history, though not completely.

You need to have a clear story as to why you've struggled before but won't struggle in a rigorous self-motivated MBA program. You need to show that you're competent at picking up new concepts and that the problem before was not your intrinsic studying abilities.

Jay,

Thank you so much for your reply.

Yes, I agree I will have some honest explaining to do regarding my grades. Overall, it was a lack of maturity on my part. At the time, I felt “getting through” University was enough. It wasn’t until I finished my degrees that I realized that University is about challenging yourself and pushing your limits. In many ways, getting into an MBA program will give me the opportunity to redeem myself for my poor effort in Undergrad.

Thanks again for the advice.

Kev

Good. Be very careful with the essay--you don't want to appear that you're seeking redemption. Rather, the essay needs to demonstrate full confidence and competence. They should feel that your past struggles were based more on poor subject choice, but since engaging with business concepts while at GE, you have really blossomed.

If your recommenders can back that up, you should be in good shape.

I'm happy to review of a draft of an essay for free if it would be helpful.

All the best,

Jay
