Hi All,

I took old GMAT Prep 1 today and got 690 (Quant-49, Verbal-34). This is my first test since I started GMAT prep. Sorry for the following long post but I am tensed after having a dismal outing in verbal section and overall test .

Quant Section:

As I didn't practice much in DS and geometry questions and couldn't plan my time distribution in Quant section, the score was not as per expectation. I was forced to guesstimate answers for questions near the end of test which reflected on my score.
Overall accuracy - 37 Correct, 9 Wrong.
Distribution of wrong questions - In the last set of questions(30-33,36-37), I ended up doing 6 questions wrong with 2 questions correct in between.
I am planning to devote more time in DS questions and time management to do well in this section.

Verbal

In the test I was fatigued and finished Verbal section 17 mins before time.
Overall Accuracy - 27 Correct, 14 Wrong - CR(3), RC(5), SC(6).
Distribution of wrong questions- 2 SC wrong in a row (4th and 5th ques), 2 CR and 1 SC in a row (9-12), one RC with 3 ques(15-17), 2 SC (31-32)
I have completed CR Bible and Manhattan SC guide (once) while practicing questions from OG12 and Verbal Review 2nd edition. I didn't go through any prep material for RC and practiced ~40 ques from OG 12 (starting from the end )with ~79% accuracy. Also for CR I practiced ~90 ques from OG 12 with ~90% accuracy.
SC has been a problem area for me and it seems like I am unable to improve in it even though I went through theory portion of Manhattan SC guide twice.

I am planning to take GMAT by August'12 and my target score is 760. I feel the target score is pretty steep with my low accuracy in Verbal and time management issues in Quant . :(

Kindly suggest how I should plan and work for next 2 months.

You already know where you are making the mistakes (SC and RC). So work on them. Categorize the mistakes by topic (Modifiers in SC, Inference in RC), find a pattern in that particular topic, practice more.

For RC, see thursday's with Ron videos related to RC passages (link below). Stick only to Official material to get to know more about the patterns. If your old strategy doesn't gaurantee you an improvement, then change the strategy. There is no point sticking to same old strategy if you aren't making any progress. https://www.manhattangmat.com/thursdays-with-ron.cfm

For SC, try to understand what's wrong with incorrect options. Instead of re reading the MGMAT books, search and stop not until you find the explanation from MGMAT books or explanations from instructors/experts. GMATPrep SCs are way too difficult compared to OG questions.

If you don't have enough material, try to get old paper based test sets or buy GMATPrep Pack 1 instead of OG 13, you will get 400 new questions.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

I would like to second SAM's thoughts.
The answer you your question is in your post itself. You know where you are going wrong. Give some time and practice to those areas :)

Thanks a lot for guiding me :)
I feel I should change the strategy for RC as suggested by you, I will get started with the Ron videos.
For SC, I am planning to revisit OG 12 and work on OG 13 while looking up explanation/strategy from Aristotle- Ultimate one minute explanations guide
Appreciate your help :)

Hi,

Ron videos were helpful on approaching RC's especially Inference based questions. I have started out practicing RC's using the techniques mentioned in the video's.
Can you recommend any video/ material fro CR as well? Although I have done CR bible, I feel it is too vast. For revising or aiming for accuracy in difficult CR questions it will be helpful if I have concise theory/practice materials.
Also, I am doing SC's from OG-12 and 13 while looking up explanations from Aristotle's - Ultimate one minute explanation guide. Do you think it's the right approach to improve accuracy in SC's?

Regards,

Regards,
You can check out every ron's videos if you are bored with reading the books. They are all helpful. :)

For CR, you can check these videos - feb 3, Mar 03, Mar 04, Apr 15th, july 14 and Sept 8th - before you start working with CR. Start with mar 03 - this will give a good idea to approach CR questions and go on with the rest. These videos cover all the CR question types. Powerscore is good option for beginners as in it is useful for those who don't know to identify the question types. If you are able to identify it intuitively, then go for the videos to hone your skills. Also you can check out MGMAT CR.

For SC, see Nov 18th video. And once you are finished seeing it, you will know the right way to prepare SC. All you had to do is practice as many problems as possible for SC, but with right approach and you got it there in that video. Apart from that instead of checking for explanations in Aristotle SC go for MGMAT SC or forum posts with expert replies. Hope this helps !!

Hi Sam,

Thanks a lot for replying back so quick!

For SC's you suggested to go into forums to look for explanations but the problem is every question has a different thread for it. Also, its very tedious to search for a thread related to a particular question. In fact I decided to go with Aristotle's explanations as I couldn't find discussions for couple of questions.

Can you please guide me or provide links to threads which has discussion on every questions from OG?

Look for posts from MGMAT forums, those posts will definitely have one of the expert replies unlike those available from btg/gmatclub. I haven't found any such link which includes every questions from OG. But you have another option. Most of the OG questions will be available in 1000 sc document. So find the questions in the document and its explanation in the following link
