In the figure above, segments PQ and PR are each parallel to one of the rectangular coordinate axes. What is the sum of the coordinates of point P ?

(1) The x-coordinate of point Q is -1.
(2) The y-coordinate of point R is 1.

Please help with above problem.

Hi Anaira,

Given that PQ is parallel to Y-axis, and PR is parallel to X-axis, we can deduce that the x-coordinate of P and Q are the same, and the y-coordinate of P and R are the same.

S1: The x-coordinate of point Q is -1 means that the x-coordinate of point P is -1.

However, we do not have P's y-coordinate. Insufficient.

S2: The y-coordinate of point R is 1 means that the y-coordinate of point P is 1.

However, we do not have P's x-coordinate. Insufficient.

S1 & S2:

The coordinates of P are; (-1, 1), thus the sum = 0.

Answer: C
