Help me with my dielemma

by sachgopa2 » Wed Jul 07, 2010 10:08 pm
Guys

I work for an IT company but work in a special group that offers Engineering design/development services/consulting.
I am a Program Manager at this company and works for a client in health care industry from last 7 yrs.

What should I mention as my industry - IT or health care?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Unless you are looking at a checklist that only allows you to put one industry down, simply say you are an IT specialist who has worked in healthcare for the last seven years. Both experiences are relevant to what you will be able to contribute in the classroom.

Hi Tani,
Thanks for your feedback. But wouldn't that give a wrong impression that I am an IT specialist? I am just managing several projects providing R&D services for a health care company? That IT tag is misleading.

What is your job title? WHAt do you actually do from day to day? If you are delivering health care services you are a health care individual, but if you are delivering IT services you are an IT specialist. If you are an engineer, that should be your designation. What does your company list as your job description?

It's weird and funny. My company is a bog giant in IT field but has a small group for engineering services. I belong to this small group and my responsibilities include delivering engineering services to a medical device manufacturing company.
My official title is Program Manager - Engineering Services.
I hope this clarifies my dilemma.

I would say you are an engineer, but you will want to be sure to emphasize that you have both IT skills and significant healthcare exposure. The latter is important because it will distinguish you from most of the other pure techies. Health care is a key field and you want to position yourself as knowledgeable.

Tani,

I would like to clarify one point: I don't have any typical IT skills. I have engineering skills, project management skills, business development skills, customer relationship (or exectations) management skills, leadership skills. In addition to this, I have very good knowledge about medical device industry (part of health care industry).

Hope it clarifies.

Thanks,
Sachin

You have unique skills - Engg for medical devices is very specialized and respected field in US.

In your resume - in summary section - make sure you highlight all your skills. Then jump into your Work Experience section where you walk your audience chronologically through various clients you've served as a Program Manager / consultant.

Avoid "IT specialist" because it will be misunderstood by non-IT audience. If you still need help with your resume - please email me (contact info is given below) and I'll be happy to guide you. Please use this BTG link as a reference to our conversation.

Good Luck!
