Venn or Grid?

by anishprabhu » Mon Feb 16, 2009 6:24 pm
At a certain company, some of the employees have advanced degrees, some have one year or more of work experience, and some have both. If 20 percent of all employees have one year or more of experience and no advanced degree, what percentage of employees have advanced degrees and less than one year of experience?

(1) 35 percent of the employees do not have advanced degrees and 55 percent have less than one year of work experience.

(2) 15 percent of the employees do not have advanced degrees and one year or more of work experience, but 45 percent have one year or more of experience.

Each statement alone is sufficient. Grid diagram would be relevant to this problem.

15 percent of the employees do not have advanced degrees and one year or more of work experience

This is the part (the and in the sentence above) that threw me off. In the grid method for stmt II this 15 could go under advance degree and less than 1 or no advanced degree and less than 1 leading to 2 different answers. Hence I decided stmt II as INSUFF .It could well be a misinterpretation on my side.

U guys may be right on D; we will wait for the OA from the user.

Regards,
Cr

Fair game; the answer is D since it is the official one.

I still have my doubts on interpretting 15 percent of the employees do not have advanced degrees and one year or more of work experience.

I SEE IN THE SOLUTION THE 15 IS PLACED UNDER NO ADV DEGREE AND LESS THAN 1.

In the grid method for stmt II this 15 could go under advance degree and less than 1 or no advanced degree and less than 1 leading to 2 different answers. Hence I decided stmt II as INSUFF.

Anyone?
