"a and b are consecutive even integers in ascending order" implies b = a + 2
We have to find the value of a + (a + 2).
"Sum of the two consecutive even integers that immediately precede a is 26" implies
(a - 4) + (a - 2) = 26
When solved, we get, 2a - 6 = 26
or 2a = 26 + 6
or 2a = 32
or a = 16

Therefore, a + (a + 2) = 2a + 2 = (2 * 16) + 2 = 32 + 2 = 34

The correct answer is D.
