Lets say,
In 1959, number of women between 20 and 21 enrolled in college = 50 (take it as 11%)
In 1959, number of men between 20 and 21 enrolled in college = 100
The proportion of women among students enrolled is: 50/150= 1/3

In 1981, number of women between 20 and 21 enrolled in college = 150 (increase in number) (take it as 30%)
In 1981, number of men between 20 and 21 enrolled in college = 450
Now, The proportion of women among students enrolled is: 150/600= 1/4,

So, from the above, though the percentage of women between 20-21 enrolled is increased, there is a greater increase in the percentage of men and hence the proportion of women among students is decreased.

So, to say whether there is a decrease or increase in the proportion of women among total, we should know the percentage of men between 20-21 enrolled in the year 1959 and 1981..

+1 for D
Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now, if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hit, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you are because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain't you. You're better than that!
