Shostakovich's Fourth Symphony had not hardly entered rehersals when the political climate turned against the composer and made him having the piece performed impossible.

1. had hardly entered rehersals when the political climate turned against the composer and made his having.

You have to use "his" since there is no pronoun explicitly mentioned in the sentence that "him" could refer to. Remember that "Shostakovich's " is not in the subject form . If it were "Shostakovich'", than we can use "him".

having here is a verbal noun. it takes possesive pronoun and so his. hope this helps:)

Also can't him refer to "composer" in D.

Experts can you please clarify this issue. Also i read somewhere that possessive+gerund form should be avoided,if it can. Now i would like to know how the meaning is changed in options above.
