OG/ Verbal review Q-24

by killer1387 » Sat Jul 09, 2011 3:29 am
Hi,
I am confused with this one.

Q.
In recent years cattle breeders have increasingly used crossbreeding,in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics and partly because crossbreeding is said to provide hybrid vigor.

(A) in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics
(B) in part for the acquisition of certain characteristics in their steers
(C) partly because of their steers acquiring certain characteristics
(D) partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers
(E) partly to acquire certain characteristics in their steers

Confusion:
While checking for parallelism here, should one check for Partly because or partly?
The answer given is confusing me i.e. E.

Please clarify.

The only confusion I guess you have is between D and E, here's what I think:

D- 'should be' indicates compulsion
E- 'to acquire' indicates intent.
Since this is 'part of' the situation I don't think 'should be' can be used. I think that would be a valid reason to choose E over D. Moreover, choosing 'partly' maintains parallelism too, it need not be 'partly because'.

Can we rule out A and B. Yes, most certainly we can. In part should be partly.
Coming to C, D and E.
Read C: ....partly because of their steers acquiring certain characteristics....
It does not make sense. They are not cross breeding because of the steers acquiring certain characteristics but rather because they might acquire certain characteristics.
We can rule out D because it has a passive voice and "should be acquired" is not needed.
E is clear an concise.

The source of this explanation is primarily the explanation given in OG.

The GMAT loves parallelism so much the two of them should get married, but it is MUCH more important to have parallelism on "partly" than to have it on "partly because". It would be unusual to have "partly because . . . partly due to" in a correct choice, but this is "partly [intent] . . . partly [belief]", and those have different structures.

Hi Jim so D is wrong only because it changes the meaning
