Veritas prep test and books questions issue!!!

Hi Everyone,

I started going through veritas prep set after my 2nd attempt and failure to achieve my desired score. Now I took my 1st veritas prep test 2months back in May 2013 and yesterday I took the second test from veritas mock. I found the mock test this time totally different the first time. Quant was lot harder and tricky even though I score Q48 on that.....Verbal was harder and tricky too but I only scored V30 on that. Now I gave my gmatprep test 2 weeks back and I scored Q49 and V35. So is it normal a drop of 5 points in verbal score. I have improved a lot in RC but I found veritas prep test RC way too dense It gave me headache( I end up taking 2 disprine tablets)......

Could someone from veritas prep please advice me what can I conclude from this or is it normal to see a drop in score when I change in strategy from some other company to veritas strategy even though they are similar but the idea is different. Also please advice me that when Should I take rest of the 3 tests as I have already taken 2 and I have my gmat 05 september 2013.

sorry you are having trouble with the transition. I am an admissions consultant and not a test prep instructor, but I would advise you to call our home office tomorrow (Monday) to speak with someone on the phone about their recommendations.

Could someone from veritas prep please advice me what can I conclude from this
Well, as someone who teaches Critical Reasoning for a living I'd have to say you really can't conclude too much from two data points!

A swing of a few scaled score points is relatively normal in the middle of your study, and has quite a few potential explanations:

-Did you take the test under different conditions? Levels of focus?
-Had you been studying/practicing as regularly leading up to both tests?
-Did you hit an RC passage or two that just clicked with your areas of interest/expertise on either test? Or any questions that you may have already seen in the forums and therefore had an edge on?
-Was your pacing/stamina similar both times?

Which isn't at all to say that the difference in scores might be directly related to the tests. Particularly with RC, for which a lot of students are reporting that the actual test these days is more dense and tricky than much of what they've studied, our goal is to make sure that our pool of questions contains challenging material. And since we're hearing and seeing across the board that current RC is denser and tougher than particularly a lot of the older OG volumes there will be some tough, dense passages in our tests (I actually worked for a good chunk of April with another instructor finding dense material to write about for new RC content that mimics a lot of what we've seen recently).

In terms of how to improve, I'd go back through both tests and analyze what kinds of questions you missed, what types of mistakes you made, how you managed your time, etc. Qualitatively understanding your mistakes is still going to be more helpful than following the scores. And to that end, I'd definitely recommend that you take further practice tests - after you've analyzed your previous tests and focused on some areas for improvement - to continue to see how you perform under test conditions and find new things that you need to improve upon.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the reply and I must say that you have found various LOGICAL Gaps in my reasoning or argument. I have watched your videos they are great. I am almost done through the veritas prep books too. One thing surprised me though that you got the same score as BRITNEY SPEARS :). Quite interesting. However, I like your teaching style and admire it. It gives me confidence. I am on 710 level currently and have my gmat on 18 september and hoping to get 740 minimum.
