The number of undergraduate degrees in engineering awarded by colleges and universities in the United States increased by more than twice from 1978 to 1985.

(A) increased by more than twice

(B) increased more than two times

(C) more than doubled

(D) was more than doubled

(E) had more than doubled

please tell me why A is wrong..

Increase by more than twice is unnecessarily wordy construction. Also redundant using 2 words like Increased and More.

IMO C

It's short, concise and conveys the point.

yes that right, OA is C, but 'more' in this question modifies 'twice', that is it tell that increase is (more than twice), (more than twice) is some quantity greater than twice, so is it the case of redundancy coz i think that increase and more do not convey the same meaning here.....
please explain whether the above reasoning is correct.
