a) no ambition excepting than to see whether

In my opinion it is C.

I grouped "...with no great seriousness or dedication" together. Because the original sentence had excepting, I figure the sentence needs a word that relates to the word "excepting."

I was split between A, C, D...then I wittled it down to C and D....then I chose C.
