The number of cars produced by United States car

The number of cars produced by United States car companies in factories located outside the United States increased by more than four times from 1982 to 1987.

A) increased by more than four times
B) increased more than four times
C) more than quadrupled
D) was more than quadrupled
E) had more than quadrupled

my doubt : why the usage of "four times" is not correct here ? in what case "four times" would have been correct

John has seen the movie more than four times.
Conveyed meaning:
On at least five separate occasions, John has seen the movie.

The number of cars increased more than four times.
Conveyed meaning:
On at least five separate occasions, the number of cars increased.
Not the intended meaning.

The intended meaning is that the number of cars produced in 1987 was more than four times the number of cars produced in 1982.
This meaning is conveyed by C:
The number of cars more than QUADRUPLED.

Conveyed meaning:
On at least five separate occasions, John has seen the movie.
