Hi, ya'll

I was doing OG PS 149 and I was thinking to myself a subquestion.

The OG PS 149 goes

"During a trip, Francine traveled x percent of the total distance at an average spped of 40 miles per hour and the rest of the distance at an average speed of 60 miles per hour. In terms of x, what was Francine's average speed for the entire trip."

Since this was a PS question, I simply set the distance 1 to x and distance 2 to 100-x to solve for rate.

In DS question, however, when there is a question involving rate, distance and time, it is not safe to assume any variables in terms of 100 even when the question gives ratio of a certain term. So my question is when is it safe to assume any variables in terms of 100 in a DS question?

You could use 100 here, because you were dealing with percents. If it said x miles you couldn't use 100-x for the rest of the trip because the total miles might be 75 or 300 or anything else greater than 40.
