In a cookie-eating contest, there are 200 cookies provided to each contestant. Both start at the same time. Contestant A wins the contest by eating 20 more cookies than Contestant B. How many cookies did the winner eat altogether?

(1) Contestant A ate his cookies at a constant rate of 20 cookies per minute and Contestant B ate her cookies at a constant rate of 15 cookies per minute.

(2) Contestant A is younger than Contestant B.

B is an absurd option.

Nevertheless,

A eats 5 biscuits more per minute.

So given he eats 20 biscuits more, the contest would have been for 4 mins.

So in 4 mins, he would have eaten 4*20 = 80 biscuits, where B would have had 60.

But how do we know how long have they been eating?
Is 80 a definite answer?

We know that:
They start at the same time
One eats 20 cookies per minute
The other eats 15 cookies per minute
The first one eats 20 more cookies

The only way all of these things can be true is if the contest lasts 4 minutes.

Hi Greg, I have a doubt in this question. As my knowledge serves -- if the contestants are given 200 cookies then they should eat all the cookies to win the competition UNLESS there is a time limit as well.

So this question seems bit awkward to me because it is not properly worded. Please let me know whether my thinking is correct.

there are slight possibilities that this question might confuse someone.

I agree the wording is bad. It does not make it clear when/why the contest ends.
I believe the intended meaning is that it ends when they can't eat any more (too full).
