Unlike the short flights of the shuttle and earlier spacecraft, which carried sufficient power in fuel
cells and batteries, a permanently orbiting space station will have to generate its own electricity.
A. the short flights of the shuttle and earlier spacecraft, which carried sufficient power in fuel cells
and batteries
B. the shuttle and earlier spacecraft, with sufficient enough power in fuel cells and batteries for their
short flights
C. the short flights of the shuttle and earlier spacecraft, which enabled them to carry sufficient

The answer should be D

In all the other choices "which" does not have a clear referent.

Its a comparison question. We need to make sure after unlike we have the correct thing. I mean the one that can be compared to a permanently orbiting space station. So this is very clear that flights cannot be compared to a permanently orbiting space station. This eliminates option A,C, and E. Majority of the job done !!!
And out of B and D the better choice is D because it uses WHICH, which properly describes the short flights of the shuttle and earlier spacecraft

Sameer's got it. This is a Comparison question.

Keep in mind that since "a permanently orbiting space station" is NOT underlined, we have to change the comparison at the front of the sentence.

"A space station" can only logically be compared to other similar noun, like the "shuttle and earlier spacecraft."

We CANNOT compare "a space station" to "flights." That is why A, C, and E are eliminated. Since B has a comma before the "with" it separates it into a new clause, so we'd need a verb to link the description to the spacecraft.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Option B is out for 2 reasons:1.Unlike X,Y---Notice here Y has a subject and verb2.Sufficient enough
If you want to fly,you have to give up the things that weighs you down!

Option B is out for 2 reasons:

Correct reasoning!

B. Unlike the shuttle and earlier spacecraft, with sufficient enough power in fuel cells and batteries for their short flights, a permanently orbiting space station will have to generate its own electricity.

Another reason to eliminate B:

with sufficient enough power in fuel cells and batteries for their short flights is problematic. It can modify that which precedes it or that which follows it.
This kind of a modifier is known as squinting/ambiguous modifier.

Compare it with the modifier in OA, which addresses this ambiguouity using relative clause, which can modify only that which precedes it.

Hi Vivian,

Do you mean to say "comma +with" phrase will always have verb?
This might be a trivial question. This phrase always gives me trouble because of the breadth of variation in meaning and usage.
