Need Suggestions For Maths Section

by luvlee_ghg » Mon Jul 13, 2009 11:53 pm
Hello All,

I am preparing for taking the GMAT by this august. Though I feel alright about the verbal section I am too concerned about the maths section. I got 19 incorrect of the 37 maths q'ns in the GMAT Powerprep software.
All that I use is OG 12 book. Though the practice questions for maths in this book is quite huge I do not find much information about the basics in solving them. The intro section( 3 pages before the practice qns ) about the different sections in maths like Arith, Algeb, Words... talks very less about the basics.
What I am looking at is a book that can talk in detail about the basics so that I can delve into the practice qns in this book again.
I am targeting a score 700+. Please let me know if this book alone would suffice and your opinion about the OG book for maths.

Thanks for your reading!!

No, the OG alone is not enough. As you've realized, it doesn't spend much time on the math basics before giving you questions. The biggest issue, however, is that OG explanations for problems often are not the "best" (e.g., fastest, fewest calculations, whatever) ways to solve them. You need some sort of prep guide to reveal tricks and shortcuts. I'll leave it up to others to recommend one.

math help

u certainly need help in maths... dont just rely on the OG. my suggestion would be start with Princeton Match review, thats a really easy and basic book to start off with, and it gives good suggestions and shortcuts to solve probs. dont just rush through it, do it carefully and spend atleast 1 week or 2 to remember everything. then move onto OG or Barrons or McGraw Hills, Manhattan, etc, not Kaplan though. Leave Kaplan for later.

@VP_Jim & rangerguy2000

Thank you both for the suggestions. I will get the Princeton Maths book tomorrow and start preparing. Could you please confirm if this is the book that you suggested?

I'd also add that the maths forum here is a great resource for picking up tips - especially for the more problematic questions. Its what I used!
