Help: profile evaluation

by ivan786 » Mon Apr 01, 2013 8:00 pm
Hi
A very good day to all
I would be very thankful if anyone could respond to my query's .
I wanted certain help in order to make my candidacy fit for colleges which i intend to apply in 2015 for class of 2018.Yes it's a long way from now but i think i am a very average indian male(with respect to indian applicant pool) and in order to compete with the very best i have to be the best.
my shortlist colleges are HBS,WHARTON, STANFORD GSB,INSEAD,MIT SLOAN and LBS.
brief profile:
indian male 25 yrs
Xth : 87%
XIIth: 73%
undergrad : 74% BSC nautical science IGNOU,DELHI (distance learning program)
I am a certified navigating deck officer holding a 2nd mate certificate of competency awarded by shipping ministry of india.
1)Presently working as a 2nd officer with a hongkong based shipping company.I specialize on chemical tanker trade(shipping and logistics)
Work exp: 5.5 yrs till may 2013
I have a experience of working on ships trading worldwide and working with multinational crew. Some of the charterers i have worked are renowned ones like Shell,BP,chevron.
more on work front i have few interesting story's that could highlight leadership qualities.
2)During my undergrads i was working on ship as cadet and have earned my certificate of competency by the govt of india on completion of my seatime so i can very well explain how it works and why a distance learning undergrad degree.
3) i am now switching over to management side and for this i have enrolled at XLRI jamshedpur,India for its general management program which is basically a Exec-PGDM. coming to XLRI now it is one of the prestigious b-school in the country so, i guess i would be now better of with the academic front displaying my abilities. The program is a regular one year and by May 2014 i would be passing out.I intend to take operation-SCM and logistics as my specialization.
4)would work for next two years in fmcg/SCM sector and apply for FALL 2016 entry.
5)In the mean time also thinking about some online certification programs to go for.please could you suggest what should i choose keeping that in view my essays and post mba goals would be centered towards operation/SCM.

extracurricular:
1)worked for an NGO(in local community so not that renowned )as a voluntary teacher for a period of 9 months.
2)some certificates of participation in other co curricular activities but all at school level.

GMAT score: 630(Nov 2012)would be retaking in 2014 so target score would be 730+.

Preparing to write a book as well.so hopefully i would able to complete before i apply and could showcase it as well.

i would like your help as to what else i could do and what areas should i work on to be accepted by the best. i can certainly go the extra mile for these schools.

please provide feedback about my choice of schools and seeing the average they select my fit as well :)

thanks.

Hi

Schools you have selected are top notch and highly competitive. Considering your current GMAT score, we would advise you to have more realistic target.
You come from a diverse back ground and you should leverage that to differentiate yourself from applicant pool. However, that is not sufficient to get admission in a competitive school. You need to work upon your application very well.
College like Wharton may not be a right fit for you as Wharton is apt for those who wish to make career in finance. On other hand, Kellogg would value your leadership and internatioanl experience.
We have successfully guided candidates from merchant navy background.
