Please Review My Profile... Thanks!

GMAT: Not yet taken, but practice scores have been consistently in the 700’s, my highest being the 4th PR test at 740 (48 Math, 44 verbal). I’m expecting a score of 720+ on the real thing.

Edit: My demographic profile - White Male

Work Experience:
Middle Market Financial Analyst at a large, regional bank in Chicago. Parent company is publicly traded.
Work ex: 1.5 years. Would be 2.75 years at beginning of Fall 09 start date, or 3.75 years at Fall 10 start date.
- Completed top-ranked Credit analysis program with LaSalle Bank (ABN-AMRO) before buyout by Bank of America, then switched positions to stay in Chicago rather than get transferred to Dallas.
- Underwrote large array of companies from publicly traded REIT syndications to small companies with just $20mm in revenue.
- Responsible for ensuring companies report earnings, and submit monitoring information in a timely manner and follow up with CEOs or CFOs to ask questions about financial performance (direct client contact)

During College Work Exp:
-Co-Entrepreneur investing own capital to begin a successful t-shirt company that produced original t-shirt designs and designed custom t-shirts for various student organizations. Responsible for all sales, shipping, and product development.
-Sold books door-to-door – Recognized as a top sales person (30/2,000) and top manager (47/several hundred). Recruited, trained, motivated 2 people under my direct management, received numerous awards for sales and hard work.

Education:
- Texas A&M – Finance – GPA: 3.65

Extracurricular Activities
-Involved in a Young Professional Development Board for a specific charitable organization. Conceptualize, organize, and facilitate fund-raising events.

Extracurricular Activities – In College
-Board of Directors for a freshman business leadership organization – Scheduled speakers, planned curriculum, Led multiple meetings, lots of public speaking, facilitated the planning and implementation of a 300 person service project. Previously in the organization, was directly responsible for mentoring in the business school.

My own plan – I’d like to pursue a specialization in Entrepreneurship at a top 10 school. Of course I will have a better chance at admission to a top program if I wait until Fall 10 to attend, but, based on my profile, what kind of route would you recommend. My thinking is that the sooner I get in to B-School, the better because banking is not my calling in life, but it has been a useful catalyst for how I will approach business acquisitions in the future. My end goal has always been to start my own company.

So, what is your take on my profile? And would I be crazy to apply with less experience this year?

Thanks!

Dear chipjet,

You have the foundation for a competitive application at almost any program; whether or not you gain admission will depend on how well you put your application together and distinguish yourself in the applicant pool. I think you could apply for fall 2009 entry if that is your true desire. While it would only be about 3 years, that is not out of the majority range for any program (3-7 years). Should you decide to do that, then you will want to be sure to craft a strong essay on the why MBA/why now/why this school question asked in some form or fashion by most programs.

Keep up the prep on the GMAT and do well. Apply early with lots of effort on the applications and you will be fine.

Good luck (and gig 'em!),
Lisa

Thanks for the quick reply!

One concern I have about applying this year is this:
I have read that when one applies a second time to a program, the application is something like, "Describe what has changes in your life since last year" or something like that.

Does this negatively affect my ability to get in to a top tier program on the second attempt if I don't gain admission to the school of my choice the first time?

Dear chipjet,

It depends. Some schools will require you to write an optional essay on why you are a better candidate this year versus last year when you re-apply. Others might have a different question for you to answer or no question. Regardless, in the event you are re-applying to a school, it is always best to contact the school to get feedback on why you were not accepted the first time. This will help you figure out what to address in order to best position your application the next time.

Generally speaking, you are not at a disadvantage if you re-apply to a program as long as you have taken steps to improve your candidacy. It will be a negative if you do not make an attempt to find out why you were rejected and essentially submit the same application again (i.e., don't rewrite your essays or retake the GMAT).

Think positively!
